Data.Lincoln Has More Data!

Posted by Jamie on November - 21 - 2011

Over the past few days I (with the invaluable help of Nick Jackson) have been working on getting data relating to the blog posts from the university’s blogs platform into ‘Nucleus’ and available through data.lincoln.ac.uk APIs. At long last, the data is now available! Obviously, only posts which have been made public are available through  [ Read More ]

Energy Data ….. A Minor Update

Posted by Jamie on November - 4 - 2011

Thanks to extra data about the physical size of the various student courts on campus being made readily available to us, I’ve been able to update the student  courts leaderboard visualisation (jamie.lncd.lincoln.ac.uk/energy/courts.php) and the punchcard visualisation (jamie.lncd.lincoln.ac.uk/energy/punch.php) to take into account the size of each individual court. This now means that the figures presented in  [ Read More ]

Most of us have been aware, for quite some time, that Facebook and other social networks are free for a reason, despite what the messages that often go viral may tell us! It can be summed up in this simple phrase: if you’re not paying for it, you’re not the user, you’re the product. Ever  [ Read More ]

Had Shakespeare’s King Richard III been around today and been interested in open data, then I am almost sure that he would have vocalised his disappointment at the lack of standardisation in open data platforms with something akin to this blog posts title. For an accurate historic record of Richard III’s famous lines, view this video,  [ Read More ]

Data.gov.uk is by no means new ‘on the scene’ of open data, but it does contain quite a few hidden gems that show a rare moment of clarity from someone, somewhere in government. In total, according to the website, there are currently 726 various datasets that can be downloaded or accessed through their API. The  [ Read More ]

Using Data.Lincoln Energy Data

Posted by Jamie on September - 28 - 2011

Recently I’ve used some of the APIs available at data.lincoln.ac.uk in order to generate a heat map, based on the energy usage over a 24hour period of each of the buildings on the Brayford Campus that have energy meters installed. Initially, the map was generated based on the total amount of energy used by each  [ Read More ]

EU Open Data Platform

Posted by Jamie on September - 28 - 2011

Over the past few days it has been announced that the initial stages of an EU open data platform, envisaged by European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes, is still on track to being released publicly, at least to some extent, in Spring 2012. This initial stage should be in the form of a “public portal for  [ Read More ]

MongoUK 2011

Posted by Jamie on September - 20 - 2011

The MongoUK 2011 conference, held at the Mermaid Conference Centre in London, provided an excellent opportunity to both learn more about MongoDB and to see how it is being used in ‘the real world’. First up was a session by Aleks Drozdov from the National Archives,  discussing how the National Archives are moving forward in  [ Read More ]
